Don’t leave me this way

The first thing I thought of when I heard that Donna Summers had passed away was I didn’t even know she was sick. When I learned it was cancer, I was of course curious to know what kind. You see, I always secretly hope that when someone dies of cancer, it’s some really obscure kind that doctors know little about. A type of cancer far removed from the kind I had. Unfortunately, that wasn’t case.

As a breast cancer survivor (I hate the term, but thankfully I did survive) I especially don’t want to hear that someone else succumbed to the same disease I had. But then I remind myself, that there are over 15 different types of breast cancer and each person’s circumstances are unique. And while 1 out of 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, the treatment outcomes are very good, especially when caught early.

Which brings me to the real reason of posting today: prevention pays. So ladies tonight, not tomorrow, tonight please perform a breast self exam. Even if you do them regularly, do one more. Gentleman, you’re not off the hook either. When, if ever, was the last time you performed a breast self-exam? Yep, you read that right. Although it is not as common, men do get breast cancer. If you find something out of the ordinary, get it checked out.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Donna Summer’s family. I hope they find comfort in knowing how many people’s lives she touched.
