Heat Warning!

To say it’s hot is an understatement. My car registered 115 degrees in the shade, at 5 pm. So it’s no surprise that I’m thirsty. I’m the first to admit that I’m horrible at hydrating, however, even I can’t ignore the dangers of dehydration during these 100+ degree days.  It’s easy to become over heated and dehydrated in this weather so here are some signs to watch out for, especially if you are exercising!

The best way to replenish your fluids is to do so throughout the day, instead of drinking a lot all at once.  If you find yourself feeling dehydrated, drink cold fluids which are absorbed into the cells quicker than warm ones. Try and avoid caffeinated drinks which can act as a diuretic, causing you to urinate more frequently.  If you are experiencing symptoms of dehydration, a Gatorade or another sports drink may help to replenish your electrolyte balance. Otherwise, for fewer calories stick to good old fashioned ice water and remember it’s easy to lose weight by sweating too much, but it doesn’t mean you have lost body fat. So drink up and be safe out there.  😎

A very good reminder for this time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. I know people who’ve had to be hospitalized because they got caught hiking in extreme heat without sufficient water. Better safe than sorry. I appreciate your list of symptoms and your suggestions. xoxo
